For the Love of Nancy
ABC, October 2, 1994
With this television movie, Executive Producers Vin Di Bona and Lloyd Weintraub, extended Vin Di Bona Productions beyond the realm of reality/comedy shows.
For the Love of Nancy was based on the real-life story of Nancy Walsh and her battle with anorexia. Despite the fact that Nancy was 18, an adult in the eyes of the law, her parents battled to become her medical guardians. This emotional drama chronicles their struggle for a court order allowing them to provide their daughter with desperately needed guidance.
Tracy Gold, best known for her long-running role on the comedy Growing Pains, played the title role, and she was especially suited for the part. Gold herself was a recovering anorexic, and understood all too well the difficulties of anorexia. Jill Clayburgh and William Devane gave outstanding performances as Nancy's parents.
For the Love of Nancy left a vivid impact with the television audience. For the 94-95 season, it was the second highest-rated television movie on ABC and the film continues to be a useful teaching tool in a number of educational programs dealing with eating disorders.
